Basic Intro to the island of SamosSamos, in the North Aegean Group, is the closest Greek island to mainland Turkey, across the Mykale Straits. It is a beautiful, largely unspoiled island and, consequently very popular with discerning tourists who will want to explore the many unspoiled mountain villages set in spectacular scenery. The island's sometimes humid climate encourages lush growth so that orchids and grapes both flourish. Local wines and ouzo are some of the best to be found in the islands. Samos' capital, Vathy, has a popylation of around 6,000 and is a popular destination for tourists with its archaeological museum containing a wealth of exhibits from the era of Polycrates. Pythagoria, the site of the ancient city of Samos, is where the the tremendous Jetty of Samos, built by Polycrates, once stood. Here also is the Evpalinos Tunnel, dating from 524 BC, which was consstructed to carry water from the mountain regions to the city. Kokkari, on the more windy northern coast of the island, is a good place for the vistor wanting to try surfing. Both are ideal centres for the tourist, with shops, bars and restaurants, but have not been spoiled by over-commercialisation. Not far from Pythagoria is the Hereon, a sanctuary dedicated to Hera and a World Heritage Site. Constructed on the already ancient site of a temple it was four times the size of the Parthenon. One can wander round the ruins and marvel at the almost unbelievable size. Pythagoras, the philosopher and mathematician known to almost every child in school for his mathematical theory, was born on Samos and has a town named in his honour, Pythagoreio (formerly Tigani). Samos was also home to a school of sculptors and architects who included amongst their number Rhoecus who was the architect of the temple of Hera and the sculptor Theodorus. An island with so much to offer the tourist, Samos is the ideal destination for an unforgettable and enjoyable holiday.
